Chiefs Begin Weekend Set Friday In Prince George

Chilliwack Chiefs (0-1-1-0, 4th in Mainland Division) VS Prince George Spruce Kings (0-2-0-0, 5th in Mainland Division)

(Friday, September 13th, Prince George Coliseum  –  6:30 pregame/7 pm faceoff on 89.5 The Drive)

The Prince George Coliseum. One of my favorite spots in the league. Really!

The Prince George Coliseum. One of my favorite spots in the league. Really! (Also, Chilliwack went 4-0 here last regular season.)

I suppose if you’re going on the road for the first time in any given season, you may as well get one of the longest trips out of the way first.

While the trip up is a bit long, the Chilliwack Chiefs are returning to a building where they’ve had some success the last two seasons – 7-2-0-1 if you include regular season and playoffs from 2011 thru ’13.

But that’s only for geeks like me to worry about.

Perhaps more importantly – You may notice the pair of zeros to the left of each team’s record column at the top of the page – both clubs are searching for a win after the Chiefs earned one of a possible four points at last weekend’s showcase, while the Spruce Kings returned home with none. Friday’s game is also Prince George’s home opener, so they’ll expect a good crowd, and a good atmosphere.

Chilliwack knows they’ll need to bring an effort similar to the one Sunday against Vernon to combat it.

Some things to consider:

1. Spruce Kings GM Mike Hawes brought back nine players from last year’s hard working squad, including puck moving blueliner Mitch Eden, forwards Jeremiah Luedtke, Chad Staley, Justin Rai, and Bryant Christian. The only thing I know about their two new goaltenders – Jesse Jenks and Alex Murray – is that neither of them are Kirk Thompson. He was good.

2. I think Chilliwack’s goaltending will be based on ‘feel’ at this point. Lyndon Stanwood was very good Sunday evening against the Vernon Vipers, and has earned the next one, while Josh Halpenny was left hung out to dry too often Saturday night against Powell River after making some nice saves early. We could see one this weekend. We could see both. Feel, man. Feel.

3. One player who has a feel for how things are done in Chilliwack – Shay Laurent – is back in the fold after being reacquired from Coquitlam on Tuesday. With this single move – and the release of Michael Willms – five of the Chiefs six D are 6’1 or taller. Carter Cochrane is no slouch either at 5’11, and while Harvey Smyl has preached about sound play in the middle of the rink in PG – he could be dangerous taking a few chances and jumping into the rush this weekend on the smaller ice surface. Chilliwack’s big D has caused problems for the Spruce Kings in their building in the past.

4. The team has scored two goals in two games. It’s hard to win that way, but you may recall the Chiefs had questions this time last year about goal scoring as well. It came around, and it will come around with this group too, from Austin Plevy on down.

5. I can’t actually think of a fifth thing. It just looks better with ‘5’ here. Should be a great set with these two teams. There’s enough returning players on both sides to stir up a little rivalry dislike.
