Volpe’s First is GWG for Chiefs in Victory

A 4-2 win at ‘The Castle’ in Prince George. 25 wins now. Two in a row for the first time in over a month. Here’s what stood out for me on a Friday night in the Province’s northern Capital. Five things:

1. Brandon Volpe’s first career BCHL goal was a nice one, taking advantage of good work from his linemates – Scott and Spencer McHaffie. Volpe’s shot beat Kirk Thompson to the top corner on the glove side, and was the eventual game winner. Those three were solid all night with their tenacious play in the offensive zone. A goal from AP callup Volpe was a good cap on a nice game from that group.

2. One of the best games for Chilliwack’s D-Core as a group in awhile. The start was a bit rocky, but that had to do with the fact that the Chiefs took too many penalties early. Chilliwack has a size advantage against the Spruce Kings forwards, and it showed again tonight in the smaller P.G. rink. Ben Masella continues his strong play, including his work on the penalty kill. Cooper Rush had himself a strong game, and the Captain brought it as he usually does. If this team combines an effort on the back end like that along with some strong Gillam goaltending, they’ll get back on a roll once again very soon.

3. Phil Zielonka finished with three points, and his goal on an Austin Plevy cross-ice pass on a 5 on 3 was almost identical to his overtime winner one week ago. Good puck movement, and a better finish on a 5 on 3. Give the Chiefs credit for killing off a two man disadvantage, and then promptly scoring on one.

4. Mitch Gillam was one of the team’s best penalty killers, especially early, making a few big saves in tight. Gillam’s steady play set the table for the rest of the game, as Prince George outshot the Chiefs 12-5 early on. A goal or two in the first from Prince George could have made all the difference. Mitch Gillam had no time for that.

5. One look the Chiefs gave on the power play tonight, and it was only for one sequence – Plevy, Esposito and Hansen up front, with Zielonka on the point. I liked that look. Possible we could see it again at some point.
