Chiefs Wreck Express Again

Chiefs 5 Express 1

“This was the good time.” – Henry Hill – ‘Goodfellas’

Ryan Donohoe scored twice, and Chilliwack’s own Josh Halpenny made 24 saves for his first win as a Chief on home ice. Chilliwack’s 5-1 victory over Coquitlam was their sixth straight, and gives the Chiefs the best record in the BCHL through another weekend.

Mitch Skapski opened the scoring early on in the game when he shovelled home a rebound off a Brodyn Nielsen shot.

Phil Zielonka answered back for the Express at the sixteen minute mark with a powerplay goal, beating Halpenny with a shot to the short side from inside the right point. Ryan Donohoe got the goal right back before the end of the first period, converting on a rebound in tight after Trevor Hills did a great job to drive to the net.

David Thompson found the back of the net for the second time in as many nights in the second period to increase the lead to two. After Hills drove hard to the net, and Ryan Donohoe created some traffic, the puck squirted to the left side of the goal, right on Thompson’s tape.

Josh Hansen added his 18th goal of the season later on in the period. He was set up by Austin Plevy, who made a nice pass out of the left corner into the slot. Hansen’s goal pushes his point total to 28, matching his output from all of last season.

Coquitlam got a few of their top players back from the World Junior A Challenge, but Alex Kerfoot, Zach Pryzbeck, and Brandon Morely weren’t factors at all in the Express’ fourth consecutive loss. Their powerplay finished 1 for 9. Credit the Chiefs’ penalty killers for continuing to work well as a group in those shooting lanes. Most everything was kept to the outside. I’m not even sure Kerfoot had a shot on goal.

Cole Huggins was chased in the third period after Donohoe added his second of the night. Daniel Urbani came in for mop-up duty. Huggins has been chased twice in five starts against the Chiefs this season.

Chilliwack is now 9-1-1 against mainland division opponents this season.

There’s not much to say right now, really. These guys are for real.
